I learned Russian by undergoing a year-long intensive course, all day, plus 2-3 hours of homework, for a year. Then I advanced on to the intermediate level for 6 more months of this. All of this was military training, and it was extremely difficult to even get into this program, let alone complete it. So I was a very fortunate and rare case; I was able to undergo immersion training without actually living in Russia or a Russian speaking country. However, I understand very, very few people get that kind of hyper-intensive training opportunity, so I understand how hard it is try to improve on just a few hours of practice a week.

After leaving the military I returned to college, and attended the University of Washington, in Seattle. In addition to studying business, I also finished my degree Russian language and history. At the end of my 4 years there, I was selected to participate in an academic exchange in the Russian Far East, in Vladivostok. So in 1997 I went to Vladivostok State University of Economics and Service, where I took mostly economics classes and one class in investment securities. Upon the completion of this, I graduated and started to look for a job.

During this time I met some Australian and English investors that were running a local investment fund, and I was able to spent a couple years working there in Primorsky Krai.
